Joan As Police Woman: performing the entire classic debut album 'Real Life'
Joan As Police Woman is the alter ego of Joan Wasser, an acclaimed artist from New York. As a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter, she is not easily categorized and has developed a unique sound that draws on elements from genres such as jazz, rock and folk. She is one of the most celebrated artists of her generation, described by The Times as "The coolest woman in pop." Moreover, she has an impressive address book. Joan was a long-time member of Iggy Pop's band and performed with Damon Albarn’s Africa Express. She has also collaborated with Tony Allen, Lou Reed, Anohni & The Johnsons, Meshell Ndegeocello, Rufus Wainwright, John Cale and David Byrne.
In 2006, Joan As Police Woman released her debut album ‘Real Life’, about which she later revealed that it bears the traces of her grieving process after the loss of her lover, Jeff Buckley, who drowned in 1997. The beautiful ballads on ‘Real Life’, infused with romantic depth, made an immediate impact.
Twenty years later, Joan As Police Woman can rightly be called a household name, still enjoying strong public interest thanks to the power of her beautiful records and intense live shows. On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of her debut, she looks back once more in a special way and performs the album live in its entirety – followed by a selection of classics.
