Personal Trainer, the relentlessly creative Dutch indie rock band led by Willem Smit, has steadily worked its way up from the Amsterdam grassroots scene to become a globally touring act on the roster of the renowned label Bella Union (Beach House, The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev,..).
In their early years, Personal Trainer featured a constantly shifting live lineup and a taste for absurdity. They even became the first band to perform non-stop for 24 hours at Paradiso.
In 2022, they self-released their debut LP ‘Big Love Blanket’, followed by ‘Still Willing’ in 2024. After three years of continuous touring, including shows at Lowlands and SXSW, they took a different approach for their new album ‘Human Assholes’. Smit used the acoustic guitar as a starting point and wrote all the songs together with the band in the same physical space, instead of assembling everything behind a screen. This led to the liberating realization that no song is ever truly finished and no show is ever the last — and that is exactly what defines Personal Trainer: “We don’t have to handle things with velvet gloves, we don’t have to force ourselves to find our sound.”
Personal Trainer is known for their hyperactive, playful and inventive indie rock shows. Catch them this autumn at Cactus Café during a new edition of Breaking Waves. For fans of Wilco, Black Country, New Road and Pavement.

Spike Fuck from Melbourne is inspired by love and obsession, addiction, sexual disorientation and Catholic guilt. Despite his limited discography – one EP, the 2016 release Smack Wave, and a handful of singles – the artist is considered a major influence on the Australian music scene.

The music of Spike Fuck is fierce and heartbreaking. Lurching between half-drowned country, ash-grey new wave and stripped-down 70s post-punk, the songs seem to bubble up out of sheer necessity. Spike Fuck rarely tours outside his home country, so take this opportunity to see this Australian cult artist perform live at Cactus Café.
