Multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer and curator L'Rain (Taja Cheek) is a rapidly rising star in her hometown New York's DIY art scene and one of the most exciting American artists of the moment. With her latest albums, 'Fatigue' and 'I Killed A Dog,' she secured the important Best New Music stamp from music blog Pitchfork no less than twice in a row. 'Fatigue' also finished at #2 in the site's list of the 100 best albums of 2021 and was even bombed by The Wire as 'Album Of The Year'. Released in 2023, 'I Killed Your Dog', on which she perfects her unique sound even more, is once again one of the most intriguing albums of the year and a major contender for the lists.

Yet L'Rain makes anything but bite-sized music. Her impressionistic compositions require time before they unfold in all their layeredness. On "Fatigue," L'Rain wrote in her kaleidoscopic songs and "sonic explorations" about themes of grief and identity. 'I Killed A Dog' deals with what it means to hurt the people you love most. Heavy themes, which L'Rain balances out with sometimes absurdist humor and sprawling musical experimentation: sensual, perhaps even sexy, but also frightening and alienating. She draws her palette from early gospel and 90's R&B, but equally from experiences gained during her tours with experimental bands like Black Midi and Animal Collective. She also plays with compositions from baroque music, dadrock à la The Strokes, tricks from the book of commercial advertising and the legacy of American black folk music.
