Is it possible for music to make you feel less lonely? Can it provoke intimacy, despite the distance between artist and listener? Canadian artist Devon Welsh seeks to find answers to questions like these in his sparse, poetic songs, and doing so, surrenders himself in a gracious and vulnerable way to his audience.
To Welsh, electropopgroup Majical Cloudz’ former frontman, human connection is everything. With Majical Cloudz, he released two well received albums on Matador, and evolved from diy-house shows in Montreal to arena shows with Lorde. In 2016, Welsh disbanded the group to evaluate his role and goals as an artist. Since then, he’s been continuing his work around a romantic fil rouge as a solo artist. His most recent album ‘True Form’ was released this year.
“An embrace from someone who seems ready to break and rebuild himself, again and again, for you …” – Pitchfork
Welsh’s live shows travel along the border between performance and concert. His minimalistic solo shows are very direct, confrontational even, but at the same time very romantic and intimate. Devon Welsh stands on stage, looks you directly in the eye and sings his songs straight into your soul.
