Remembered for a While - The days of Nick Drake

Few words as prophetic and poetic as those from the Song Fruit Tree: “Forgotten while you’re here, Remembered for a while”? Nick Drake wrote this phrase shortly before his untimely death in 1974, almost 50 years ago. A breath away from entering the 27 Club, this talented artist was in life as unknown as he was brilliant and his first decade in the beyond premonitioned an almost complete oblivion. With the blossoming of the 21st century, a wave of remembrance grew that lifted Nick Drake to his rightful place as an icon.

The mourned young lad (who would now be 75 years old), can, in 2023, count amongst other Elton John, Bon Iver, Beck and Jose Gonzales as huge fans and hugely pressed his influential stamp on the music of REM, Norah Jones and Elliot Smith.

Nick Drakes’ fleeting life and introverted character made him into an enigmatic cult figure: for some he was a tormented recluse that preferred oblivion to popularity, for others he was a paragon of the music industry not acknowledging or appreciating genius or being too late to do so. For Naima Joris, Gianni Marzo, Nicolas Rombouts, Jan Swerts and Renée Sys, Nick Drake is a composer and executor of timeless classics such a ‘River Man’, ‘Northern Sky’ and ‘Pink Moon’. To bring homage to the enigmatic English bard and to show the man behind the myth, these five musicians are putting up a show with both stories from Drake’s short life as well as interpretations of his greatest hits that never reached those heights, but grew into well loved fruits of a tree felled too soon.
