London slowcore quartet deathcrash gets its intensity from slow build-ups that climb towards punishing crescendos. The band is part of the inventive scene around the Windmill in Brixton, home to acts like Squid, Black Midi and Black Country, New Road. While their peers are mostly known for their colourful and extraverted guitar music, deathcrash’s shy and quiet focus mirrors the path of their songs: start quietly, only to swell slowly and then come crashing down hard in the end.
Their 2021 EP ‘People Thought My Windows Were Stars’, featuring 45 minutes of whispering guitars and seething peaks, was a firm statement by the band, and was received by Duyster as THE lockdown soundtrack of that winter. January brought the release of debut album ‘Return’, a huge step forward that sees the band add elements of doom metal, folk, 90’s emo, and screamo to their sound. deathcrash’s spoken-word-meets-post-rock-vibe has earned the band comparisons to Slint, but the power of their crescendos leans more towards the more intense side of post-rock giants like Explosions In The Sky and Mogwai, and the melodic slowcore classics like Codeïne and early Low. We’re more than ready to let deathcrash’s silky steamroller flatten us to our very core. Breaking Waves!
