Since debuting as Spinvis back in 2002, Erik de Jong has occupied a unique space within Dutch Pop. His poetic lo-fi-cut-and-paste songs, musical shortfilms even, are warm, original, and instantly recognizeable.
That’s despite not fearing experimentation. As a former student at the Amsterdam Conservatory, he’s intimately familiar with the art of building a song. His lyrics full of stories, combined with his colourful arrangements, constantly sees Spinvis balance on the edge between accessible and surprising.
His succesful debut album from 2002 seemed like a tough act to follow, and yet he’s consistently been able to do so, with albums like ‘Dagen van Gras, Dagen van Stro’ (2005), ‘Tot Ziens, Justine Keller’ (2011), ‘Trein Vuur Dageraad’ (2017) and ‘7.6.9.5’ (2020), with this year’s ‘Be-Bop-A-Lula’ a fine addition to that discography.
